The "Γενικό Επιτελείο Ναυτικού, ΓΕΝ" (Navy General Staff) was established by law on 21 July 1907 and organized by Royal Decree on 12 November of the same year as "Αρχηγείο
Βασιλικού Ναυτικού και Αρχηγείο Ναυτικού" (Royal Naval Headquarters).
The flag is a horizontal background featuring the CoA composed of a cross, an anchor and a trident, featuring on top the Greek initials after its former denomination, Royal Hellenic Navy (Βασιλικόν
Ναυτικόν, Vasilikón Naftikón, abbreviated ΒΝ) and above that the motto "Μέγα τὸ
τῆς θαλάσσης κράτος" ("Great is the maritime state"), inside a shield. The color horizontal stripes are a middle red stripe with two equally sized white stripes and a blue outline, all horizontally laid and behind the
