Hungary has 8 regions (Hungarian: régió, prural: régiók) by the common classification of territorial units for statistics (NUTS) of European Union. They don’t have own self-governments, they were created only for statistical purposes. Consequently, they don’t have own symbols, flags or coats of arms. These regions are:
Hungary is divided 19 counties (Hungarian: vármegye**, plural: vármegyék) and
its capital which has a special status and is not included in any county.
Counties are divided into 197 districts (Hungarian: járás, plural: járások),
there are 174 districts in the 19 counties, and there are 23 districts (Hungarian:
kerület, plural: kerületek) in Budapest. The districts (járások) are created for
public administration purposes, they replaced the 175 subregions (Hungarian:
kistérség, prural: kistérségek) of Hungary in 2013. They don’t have own symbols,
flags or coats of arms, but some of them have logos or logo like symbols. The 23
districts (kerületek) of Budapest have also districts (járások) rights, and they
have own self-governments and symbols, too.
As a total, there are 3155
localities (Hungarian: település, plural: települések), which are 348 towns (Hungarian:
város, plural: városok;) and 2807 villages (Hungarian: község, plural:
községek).
There are 25 of the towns are so-called urban counties (Hungarian:
megyei jogú város - town with county rights), and they do not belong to any
counties. All county seats (except Budapest) are urban counties.
There are 127
large villages or municipalities (Hungarian: nagyközség, prural nagyközségek) of
2807 villages. By administrative means, today there are no significant
differences between villages and municipalities, this category comes from
historical traditions.
