Coat of arms

Shield Argent, a horse forcene Sable, flanked by embowed branches Vert tied Gules - wheat at dexter fruited Or and olive at sinister fruited Sable, in central chief a fleur-de-lis Azure. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black capitals: "FREGUESIA DE ALTER DO CHÃO".
The lily is an attribute of Our Lady of Assumption, the local patron saint.

Alter do Chão Commune is one of the four communes of Alter do Chão Municipality (q.v.); it had 2373 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 140.67 km².
