The first edition [b7b41] appeared in 1941
(on occasion of the 650th anniversary of Switzerland). But which
edition was this? At least the 2nd, but I don’t know if there
were more editions in that year. Martin Karner, 23 May 2024

The recoding of Croatia’s state symbols and of its culture
of remembrance was shaped by two factors: firstly, the
disintegration of the Yugoslavian state and the search for a
distinctive national identity, and secondly, the desire for
reconciliation within Croatia and for national continuity. This
process became more emotionally charged as a result of the wars in
the former Yugoslavia (1991-95) and the related memories of World
War II, which made it impossible for a dispassionate exchange of
views about the recent past to take place.

Previous edition: [r9u13]
The Olympic World Library has published in PDF format the flag
manual of the Rio
2016 Olympic Games. Unfortunatelly in both manuals (this one and
Sochi 2014 [r9u13])
flag depictions are not vectorized images but pixeled ones.
Another big and notorious absence in both manuals is that, as a
difference to prior manuals such as that of London 2012
[g9b12], there is no indication
of color shades. Juan Manuel Gabino Villascan, 29 Apr 2017
The official
website of The Olympic Studies Centre mentions two volumes
(«Vol. 1 : Maio-May 2016. - Vol. 2 : Agosto-August 2016.») but
the cover of the downloadable PDF states «August 2016» and its
contents seem to be complete. Was the May 2016 issue not a first
volume but a first edition, perhaps? António Martins, 20 Dec 2024
Missing info! (7) Title: Estampas do Sabonete Eucalol : Bandeiras Estadoaes do Brasil
(in English: Eucalol Soap Plates : State Flags of Brazil) Medium: set of numbered collectibles (usu. to be pasted on album with blanks) Language:Portuguese Edition (publisher: place): (Brazil) Edition date:193X (?)
Remarks: Three series (25-27) with six cards each.
Available on
line.
I would place the date of the set between 1930 and 1937. The
cards couldn’t be pre-1930 because they show the modern black
and red flag of Paraíba with the
inscription "Négo", which was adopted in late 1930.
There are two clues to the latest possible date. Getúlio
Vargas outlawed state flags in Brazil from 1937 to 1946, so the
cards would not likely have been issued between those years. That
they were not issued after 1946 is evident from the spellings of
the names of several states. The names of Minas Geraes, Parahyba,
Piauhy, Goyaz, and Matto Grosso were all changed in 1943 to Minas
Gerais, Paraíba, Piauí, Goiás, and Mato Grosso. So
the cards must have been issued before the 1937 Vargas ban on state
symbols.
Because the Parahyba card shows both the Négo flag as well
as an earlier design (the only
state for which two flags are shown), I am inclined to think that
the cards probably come from the earlier years of the 1930-37
period, but that’s harder to prove. A possible clue on this
point is that the series name for the cards, "state flags"
is spelled interchangeably "bandeiras estadoaes" and
"bandeiras estaduais".

This source is an encyclopedic dictionary in 3 volumes that
includes a flag plate (totalling 160 flags) near the entry about
"flag" (in volume I, 934 p.). This a Brazilian translation and
adaptation of the Larousse dictionary, in French. This Brazilian
adaptation was published in Portugal without changes. Encyclopedias
usually have large editorial teams, and so the "main author(s)"
field doen’s apply. In this case, the credits occupy a whole
page. Jorge Candeias, 06 Feb 2005
I suspect my copy is identical to Jorge’s, or very simlar:
The 5th reprint, issued on 1981.12; its title is Dicionário
Enciclopédico Koogan Larousse Selecções; I’m
not sure whether that’s also the title of the Brazilian edition.
The co-publisher and printer for my copy is «Selecções
do Reader’s Digest: Lisboa». The original Brazilian edition
had only two volumes: the 3rd volume was added to the version
published in Portugal: it’s divided in several thematic
chapters, in true encyclopedic fashion, each under attributed
authorship (including one on Geneologic Heraldry, by Bénard
Guedes).
The other volumes are in dictionary style, with headings sorted
from "A" to "Z": common nouns in vol. 1, proper names in volume 2;
there is no indication of individual authorship, as said. Also as
said, entry "bandeira"
("flag") is in vol. 1, p.__, and it’s followed by 3 non-numbered
pages with the usual grid-like rank-and-file flag-chart images,
mostly in ~2:3 homogeneous ratio and limited palette, in a total of
160 flags — mostly national flags plus a few of international
organizations and assorted others. (Some are noteworthy.)
I presume most, if not all, of these illustrations were taken
wholesale from the French original («Librerie Larousse, Paris,
1977») and are therefore well known internationally. Given the
contemporary editorial and cultural landscape, I suspect that this
set of flags caused more impact among the Brazilian and Portuguese
budding vexillologist than its original had in France, for relative
lack of competing sources.
